Types of Hearing Aids

Our Audiologists can show you a range of hearing aids currently available from all manufacturers. They can recommend which aids would best suit your hearing loss, management abilities and lifestyle. They can also help you to compare the cost, features and benefits of different aids so that you can make an informed choice.

Hearing aid styles

Hearing aids come in a variety of styles, each with its advantages and limitations:

CIC (Completely-in-the-Canal)

The smallest of all hearing aid styles, the CIC is hidden inside the ear canal and is virtually invisible.

Suits mostly mild to moderate hearing losses, although there are some styles which cater for more severe hearing losses.

ITC (In-the Canal)

Still small and discreet, these models are easy to handle and offer the wearer additional features.

Suits mild to moderate hearing losses.

ITE (In-the-Ear)

This style features a wider selection of wearer-controlled functions and comfort features than the CIC or ITC.

Suits mild to more severe hearing losses.

BTE (Behind-the-Ear)

This type of hearing aid fits snugly behind the wearer’s ear. Tubing attaches the hearing aid to a custom ear mould placed in the ear. There are a variety of styles available within the BTE category, including a mini-BTE.

Suits mild to profound hearing losses.

Open Ear

The open ear design sits behind the wearer’s ear and ultra-thin tubing that is virtually invisible fits in the ear.

Suits mild to moderate hearing losses.

RIC (Receiver-in-the-Canal)

This appears similar to the open ear style except that a speaker is situated in the ear canal, resulting in increased fidelity of sound, a wider fitting range and better localisation of high frequency sounds.

Suits mild to more severe hearing losses.
